Itinerary in 6 Days
Early arrival in Quito and visit the Equator line and the Intiñan museum.
Overnight in the hotel
Drive north for about 2 hours through the mountains of the Andes we reach one of the most popular tourist destinations, Otavalo.
There we will take a small road, which will take us to the Mojanda lagoon, we will head out for our first acclimatization peak.
Fuya Fuya rises over 14,000ft and provides a beautiful walk through high alpine meadows to the rocky summits.
Drive back to Otavalo and overnight (B/BL/-)
We will wake up very early and drive for about 1.5hrs to Imbabura.
Our second acclimatization peak is over 15,000ft and will take most of the day.
This imposing mountain has the perfect positive slope to train in altitude, from 3400m to 4600m. The climb requires 3rd-4th class terrain near the summit.
Return to Otavalo and dinner. (B/BL/-)
Today, we will have a late breakfast and make last minute purchases at the Otavalo market before heading to the Cayambe Refuge. The drive to the Refuge takes about 3 hours from Otavalo.
We will have lunch and head up to the glacier for ice practice and training.
We will learn some basic techniques on how to handle the climbing equipment (rope, crampons, ice axe). Dinner and early rest in preparation for the climb of Cayambe the following night/day
Food will be served at the refuge and we will spend the night here. (B/BL/D)
We will wake up at midnight to get ready .
After a light breakfast, we will start our adventure up to the top, it will takes us 5-7 hours before hitting the summit around sunrise.
From the summit of Ecuador’s third highest peak (18,996ft) we have stunning views of Antisana, Cotopaxi, Chimborazo, Imbabura, and many more high peaks throughout the country.
We will take our time for pictures of the beautiful surroundings and then we will head back to the refuge in 3 to 4 hours.
At the refuge we will rest, pack our belongings, have something to eat, drink and from here, we head up to Quito. (B/-/-/)
